Welcome to Soul Underground!

This will be a site dedicated to articles I’ve written over the past few years, CD reviews and pod-casts featuring records highlighting the Lifeline Rare Soul All-nighters or simply personal favourites of mine.

The Stafford Story. A series of podcasts telling the story of the all-nighters help at Stafford’s Top Of The World club on Newport Road. The music of not just Stafford but throughout the 80’s has been my inspiration as a collector and DJ. The venue hasn’t received the recognition I think it deserves and this page is to put that right. Many dismiss the Stafford era, mostly through ignorance and because they weren’t around in the 80’s but the music discovered and played not just at Stafford but The Winding Wheel in Chesterfield, Guy’s Soultown promotions at Mexborough and Blackburn and other venues like Bradford feature on many DJ’s playlists today.
The podcasts tell the story not in words but through the music Dj by Dj. Some fantastic music, many forgotten or semi known, some still unknown to those who missed the 80’s Northern Soul Scene.

The Kell Osborne Story is the story of one of the founding members of the Primes. They of course went on to make up part of the Temptations, sadly without Kell. Kell does have a story and it is told here for the first time in print.
In the magazine section you will find the Magazines of the late Pete Lawson and Jock O’Connor converted to digital format, ideal for iPads, Kindles and giving a great insight into the Northern Soul Scene from their viewpoint in the late 80’s early 90’s
Highland Records, this is the first ever label listing for the label, now available in several places. I compiled this for Derek Pearson’s magazine ‘Shades Of Soul’ some years ago now and I thought a good idea to include on this site.
Keep checking back to this page as podcasts will be added as time allows.
Soulfully yours
